Department of Special Education Programs

As the incidence of students with mild to moderate physical and/or mental disabilities continues to rise, so does the demand for highly qualified special education professionals. The Department of Special Education and Reading prepares students to help create innovative techniques for students with disabilities and to allow disadvantaged children to succeed. Several undergraduate and graduate programs that are nationally certified are available.

1比1现金棋牌跑得快苹果The Collaborative Special Education/Elementary Education program is a unique program to SCSU. Through the program students are prepared for certification in both Elementary Education grades 1-6 and Special Education grades K-12. This provides students with additional options when searching for jobs and more flexibility throughout their careers. Students have multiple options in the program to work in local schools through our fieldwork classes; from observations and tutoring, to teaching small groups and whole classes. The program culminates in a student teaching semester where students participate in 8 weeks of students elementary level students teaching and 8 weeks of student teaching in a special education program. Students in this program also are required to have a second major, usually interdisciplinary students (IDS) as a state requirement as well as to expand their overall subject matter knowledge for being and effective educator.


The Special Education Comprehensive Program prepares students for teaching in the field of special?education from grades K-12 in all areas of exceptionality. Students gain invaluable experience throughout the program through the multiple fieldwork opportunities that are incorporated into the coursework. The program completes in the last semester with a full time student teaching experience.


The ABA programs prepare students to meet the coursework requirements to sit for the exam to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), an international certification in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Professionals with certification in ABA are highly sought after in many fields including education, special education, and school psychology, There are two ABA program options – a Sixth Year Diploma Program and a Certificate Program. Both programs prepare students to take and pass the BCBA exam and to use ABA in applied settings, such as with individuals with or without disabilities in educational or therapeutic environments. The ABA courses will be particularly relevant for special educators, school psychologists, and other educational professionals. Supervised Independent Fieldwork is available as a program option.

Post-Baccalaureate: A route to certification for future educators with a Bachelor's degree

This program prepares students for special education certification. This program culminates in a semester of student teaching experience in special education settings in CT.?
